What is happening

Asylum seekers and families who live in the U.S. legally, while they wait for a decision on their case, are being pushed out of the system. New fees, short deadlines, and confusing rules make it easy to miss a step. Missing a step can give the government a reason to deport people back to danger.

These are people whose asylum cases have been open for more than a year. Many fled extreme violence. Many have lived here for years and are rebuilding their lives with their families. This rule throws that into chaos. It can punish someone for a small thing: a letter lost in the mail, not having a bank account, or not reading English well.

If you are an asylum seeker

ASAP has a clear, step-by-step guide to the new fee: how to check whether it applies to you, how to find your A-Number and Receipt Number, and how to pay. It is the best place to start.
